How do I get my website to be found at the top of search engines?
Why am I not found on Google?
What changes can I make to be found high on a search result?
Does SEO really work?

In a nut shell, these are some of the most sought after questions to anyone with a web presence. Look, let’s get something clear and out of the way now. Fact… you could have the greatest looking web site in the world, you could offer the best products and services but all of that is a moot point if no one can find you. The reality is that you and me and 99% of all Internet users worldwide, will use one of the major search engines to find what we’re looking for, Google being by far the most popular.

The answer to “How do I get found at the top of Google?” is easier that most people think, but to make the changes necessary to even coming close to making it happen, requires a clear understanding of how Google and other search engines work. As I mention in my book, imagine trying to be a major league baseball player without knowing or even understanding the rules of the game. Clearly it won’t happen.

No one is born understanding how the Internet works. Sure you may have heard of the terms IP address, web page, DNS, meta tags or domain names, but how many of you truly understand what they are, how they work and most important, how your understanding of the Internet plays in the role of your web site getting found properly.

That is the reason I wrote “The #1 Guide to Internet Marketing”. To help you understand everything you need to know about the Internet and the process of having a successful online presence. Written for my mom, “The #1 Guide to Internet Marketing” is unlike any other book on the subject. No disrespect to my mom, but trust me, if she can understand it, then you can too. Written in plain simple English, this book takes you by the hand and explains everything you need to know. From how the Internet was formed to some of the most sophisticated Google algorithms. It is by far, the most comprehensive yet easy to understand book ever written on the subject.

So back to the question and the million dollar answer…. How do I get found at the top of a Google search result?

The answer is… it depends.

It depends on a lot of factors. For one, you need to understand what Google looks for. There are so many variables that it would be impossible to list them all here. That is exactly why this book was written. It’s important to note however that trying to be found under the term “pneumatic shock absorbers” is completely different from trying to be found under the term “adult sex toys”.

As a Google engineer once said to me …

“Getting found number one in Google under a natural search result, in some cases, is not even something I can do. Our algorithms and heuristics are so complex and sophisticated that not even someone who created these algorithms could say one way or another why one web site will rank higher over another. There are so many variables that no one can guarantee a natural number one position for a specific keyword or keyword phrase. However understanding what Google looks for and keeping it simple will almost always yield the results a web site owner is looking for.”

So let me make this clear, if you don’t want to learn anything or feel like you already know everything, or rather pay someone to help you get found predominantly on a search engines, then stop here. Stop wasting your time on our site and continue down the path you chose. This web site is definitely not for you.

For those of you who have heard of me, or are perhaps familiar with my previous book, then you already know that I don’t mince words. If you want to give yourself the advantage, educate yourself and in the process of marketing your web site, and wish to stop wasting a lot of time and money, then I urge you to get our new book.

Regardless if you’re completely new to the Internet or a seasoned web master, you will walk away saying “Wow, this was the best investment I’ve ever made regarding my online web presence”. How can we be so sure? Because we hear it a lot, everyday!

Just like a key, everything hinges on a password. Think about this for a moment. What if someone had access to to your email account, online bank account, FTP password?… yeah it’s enough to make anyone who cares straighten up and get tense. While nothing is 100% secure, there are things you can do to minimize the horror of getting hacked.

To begin with NEVER elect to “Automatically Sign In” when logging into your Gmail, Google Apps account or any web site for that matter. The few seconds it takes to type in your user name and password is great insurance in the event someone gains access to your computer.

The next recommendation is to create a password scheme. For example, use 4 numbers, perhaps your month and the year you were born. Then perhaps your first name alternating between upper and lower case letters, then 01, 02, 03, 04.

If John was born February 2, 1964 then a good password would be 0264JoHn followed by 01, 02, 03, 04 (0264JoHn01). The last two digits would represent the time of the year, in this case, which quarter of the year. If it’s March, then the last 2 digits would be 02. If the current month is November, then 04. This password scheme works well because it also forces you to change your passwords at least 4 times a year based on the time of year or quarter.

This same scheme could also be used for passwords on certain web sites. For example, if you visit CNN.com often and you need to create a password for their web site, then consider using the first 3 letters of their domain name in conjunction with the scheme you just learned (cnn0264JoHn) and possibly forgo the last two digits. If the web site was Walmart, then wal0264JoHn. This ensures that every password for almost every web site you visit is unique and easy for you to remember.

Feel free to create your own password scheme to help you easily recall your password but make it difficult enough that it would be impossible to guess. Never use the same password for everything! Never use the same password for everything! Never use the same password for everything! Do I need to repeat that again? Good.

Any web site which has access to personal information such as banks or email accounts, should use a scheme forcing you to change your password each quarter.

Using “bosco” as your password is not advisable. Sorry Seinfeld lovers, that was just too tempting not to throw that in.
